CWCC

Life insurance in Thunder Bay

CWCC works with families, resource sector workers and business owners in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario on life insurance, living benefits, succession planning and capital strategy: entirely online. The firm is registered with Quebec’s AMF under number 602293 and is licensed to place insurance in Ontario, where Jose Salloum is a licensed life insurance agent with FSRA.

A point about titles

In Ontario the titles “Financial Planner” and “Financial Advisor” are protected under the Financial Professionals Title Protection Act. We do not use them. Jose Salloum is a licensed life insurance agent here: that is what his FSRA licence permits.

What makes Thunder Bay different

Thunder Bay is the service centre for an enormous territory, and distance here is a daily fact rather than a consideration.

A resource and transport economy. Forestry, processing, the port, rail and road transport, with pronounced cycles.

A regional hub role. A hospital, a university, public services and commerce serving communities spread across hundreds of kilometres.

A great deal of remote work. Sites, camps, rotations, and travel that is part of the job.

A population used to dealing with distance. Which makes it all the more important to say precisely what a remote service does and does not allow.

What “entirely online” covers, and what it does not

This is the central question here. We write at the top of every page that the service is delivered entirely online, and that sentence deserves detail rather than repetition, particularly for someone living hours from a large city.

What genuinely happens remotely

Most of the process does. The first conversation, the needs analysis, reading your existing contracts, comparing the options, the application itself and its electronic signature, then delivery of the contract: all of it happens by video and electronically, without your travelling once.

The annual service that follows works the same way. On that count, living in Thunder Bay and living in Laval make no difference at all.

The two steps that are not virtual

The exceptions need to be stated precisely, because they are real and they weigh more heavily away from the centres.

The paramedical visit. Depending on your age, the amount applied for and your answers, the insurer often requires a health professional to attend and take measurements and samples. That means somebody physically present. In large centres the appointment is arranged within days; in a remote region availability is thinner and the wait longer.

The attending physician’s report. The insurer may ask your clinic for a copy of your file. That is by far the leading cause of a slow file, and it is also the one step neither you nor we control. A short-staffed clinic answers when it can.

What genuinely helps

If a paramedical visit is genuinely impractical in your case, say so in the first conversation. We would rather know at the start and work within that constraint than have you complete an application that runs into it three weeks later.

A remark about timelines

We do not promise a processing time, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The length depends on the insurer, the product, whether an examination is required, and how quickly a clinic responds.

What we can do is tell you, at each stage, what is outstanding and with whom. A slow file is frustrating; a slow file where nobody knows where it is stuck is far more so.

One important point: protection does not begin when the application is signed. It begins when the contract is in force according to its own terms, and that distinction matters throughout the waiting period.

What Ontario adds

Estate Administration Tax is calculated on the value of assets passing through the estate. A death benefit paid to a named beneficiary does not pass through it.

For a family living far from the large centres, one practical precaution is added: make sure a trusted person knows where the contracts are. Distance makes a search for documents markedly longer.

What we do for families here

We first check whether your application can be handled without an examination, because that is what simplifies things most when you live at a distance.

We then tell you exactly which steps will require a physical presence, before you commit to the process.

We keep you informed of where the file stands, including when the answer is that we are waiting on somebody else.

The first meeting

Half an hour, by video, at no cost and with nothing to sign. Mention your location at the outset: it is useful information and not an obstacle. At the end you will know what the process will actually require of you, and not only what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is everything really done remotely?

Most of it, yes: the conversation, the analysis, the application, the electronic signature, delivery of the contract and the annual service. Two steps are exceptions: the paramedical visit where it is required, and the report the insurer requests from your clinic.

Will I need a medical examination?

It depends on your age, the amount applied for and your answers, not on where you live. Some applications require none at all. It is worth checking first when you live far from a centre.

Why is my file taking so long?

The most frequent cause is waiting on the report requested from your clinic, and it is the one step neither you nor we control. A chase from the patient often lands faster than a request from an insurer.

Am I covered as soon as I sign the application?

No. Protection does not begin when the application is signed but when the contract is in force according to its own terms. That distinction matters throughout the waiting period and has to be allowed for.

Do you meet people in Thunder Bay?

All meetings are held online, which spares a considerable journey to anyone living outside the city. The office is in Laval and the firm is registered with the AMF under number 602293.

Are participations guaranteed?

No. The scale is set each year by the insurer’s board according to how the participating account performed. What the contract records as guaranteed stays guaranteed; the scale varies.
